A former FBI Special Agent, U.S. Army officer and leading cyber-security expert offers a devastating and essential look at the misinformation campaigns, fake news, and electronic espionage operations that have become the cutting edge of modern warfare—and how we can protect ourselves and our country against them.
Clint Watts electrified the nation when he testified in front of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election. In Messing with the Enemy, the counterterrorism, cybersecurity and homeland security expert introduces us to a frightening world in which terrorists and cyber criminals don’t hack your computer, they hack your mind. Watts reveals how these malefactors use your social media information and that of your family, friends and colleagues to map your social networks, identify your vulnerabilities, master your fears and harness your preferences.
Thanks to the schemes engineered by social media manipulators using you and your information, business executives have coughed up millions in fraudulent wire transfers, seemingly good kids have joined the Islamic State, and staunch anti-communist Reagan Republicans have cheered the Russian government’s hacking of a Democratic presidential candidate’s e-mails. Watts knows how they do it because he’s mirrored their methods to understand their intentions, combat their actions, and coopt their efforts.
Watts examines a range of social media platforms—from the first Internet forums to the current titans of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn—and nefarious actors—from al Qaeda to the Islamic State to the Russian social media troll farm—to illuminate exactly how they use Western social media for their nefarious purposes. He explains how he’s learned, through his successes and his failures, to engage with hackers, terrorists, and even the Russians—and how these interactions have generated methods for fighting back against those that seek to harm people on the Internet. He concludes with a snapshot of how advances in artificial intelligence will make future influence even more effective and dangerous to social media users and democratic governments worldwide. Shocking, funny, and eye-opening, Messing with the Enemy is a deeply urgent guide for living safe and smart in a super-connected world.

Hmm, it does make one wonder the reality of this author’s material. The FBI admitted that they weren’t allowed to access the DNC’s or Clinton campaign servers, so how did former FBI Special Agent Clint Watts know that it was the Russians that did it.
Place that in relation with the fact that the morning after WikiLeaks published the DNC’s emails pointing out that they were rigging the nomination process and Hillary Clinton being on live TV claiming that “the Russians did it”, it should make any intelligent person question both the truth to that statement.
Toss in the fact shortly after that DNC’s IT staffer Seth Rich was shot (and later died) in a robbery attempt where they left his wallet, and the quick closure of that case where no suspects were ever found. Or that WikiLeaks has an open $25,000 reward for his killer, it should make one wonder.
So who gives the public the most smoke enemas and who should we question more: the Russians, the cyber-terrorists, or in the US the political parties and their henchmen in the media.

hardworker, you’ve been listening to too many talk-radio nutjobs. Or Trump. Or both. Sober up, come back to reality.

What? Watts? You can surely add this one to “FAKE NEWS”

@Flyinby, go ahead, enjoy the smoke enema you’re getting. All of what I mentioned above is true. But no, I don’t follow right wing media. But I do ask a lot of questions about supposed coincidence and find its very interesting what the media/politicians say and what they don’t say.
As for books like this they are nothing more than money grubbing fecal matter no better than sensationalism. And they are allowing Trump to keep his MAGA promise, one pathetic author at a time.
So by all means, read/listen to them while you watch your “reality” TV or play video games and think that you are intelligent doing so.

LOL at the “Reality TV” comment. You’re fired, hardworker.

Anyone who isn’t smart enough or is just too lazy to see fake news for what it is probably desrves to be fooled.
It really doesn’t take much effort these days to go back to original audio or video, examine past articles on the same subject, etc.
Case in point: msm predicted Hillary Clinton would be the 45th POTUS.

@chrisxiii, it’s too bad that the media stopped reporting the news and not being the news.
As for the prediction of Clinton winning, MSN had a nice little graph of the states’ electoral votes up for months showing her winning. Like all the polls, were wrong? Hmm!
How about the fact that Bill’s administration was the most scandal ridden ever, and Hillary was hip deep in most of it, yet it was never mentioned in non-right wing media.
While most media was screaming about Trump’s stupid University, msm ignored Hillary’s being SOS giving $56M to Lauderrette University, and then Bill accepting almost $18M in payment for his honorary position. Gee, where I come from, that’s called a kickback, it’s illegal as hell. Yet The Washington Post had several articles praising Bill for his roll there.
I don’t like Trump, and I can believe he did most of the things he’s been accused of in the media. But he’s an amateur compared to the Clintons in how he operates. Yet, 90% of the media loves Hillary when she constantly does the blatantly obvious illegal action.
As poor a President as Trump is, Hillary would have been worse because she would be too busy lining her pockets (not that Trump probably isn’t). But hey, Trump hasn’t rented out the Lincoln bedroom yet.

In a democratic system, your party isn’t going to win every single election. You have no a priori entitlement to power. You lost this time. Get over it and try again next time.
