The New York Times best-selling book exploring the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged and how these reactions maintain racial inequality.
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to “bad people” (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue.
In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.
“[T]houghtful, instructive, and comprehensive… This slim book is impressive in its scope and complexity; DiAngelo provides a powerful lens for examining, and practical tools for grappling with, racism today.” (Publishers Weekly)
“As a woman of color, I find hope in this book because of its potential to disrupt the patterns and relationships that have emerged out of long-standing colonial principles and beliefs. White Fragility is an essential tool toward authentic dialogue and action. May it be so!” (Shakti Butler, president of World Trust and director of Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible)
“A rare and incisive examination of the system of white body supremacy that binds us all as Americans… With authenticity and clarity, she provides the antidote to white fragility and a road map for developing white racial stamina and humility. White Fragility loosens the bonds of white supremacy and binds us back together as human beings.” (Resmaa Menakem, author of My Grandmother’s Hands and Rock the Boat)

Not at all as long as you are willing to have a adult conversation and not go on a childish rant.

If Michael Eric Dyson recommends this book, you just know it´ll be race baiting nonsense. playing the race card to make a buck. Enjoy

White boys already in the comments mad. Get over it CACs. You’re time is up.

CAC? Customer acquisition cost? Now that’s cryptic!

It’s not that white people are afraid to talk about racism so much as no one will listen to any opinion contrary to their “adversarie’s” preconceived fantasies of minority oppression, when the talk goes beyond their hide-bound paradigm of victimhood.
They are so indoctrinated by the media and their “leaders” convincing them that they are victims (and didn’t know that until someone told them), that discussing the topic with them, calmly, is nearly impossible. Which is why any differences between whites and blacks will always be characterized, by the latter, as racist.
Take the George Floyd murder (yes, it was murder) as an example. At this time there is not a shred of evidence that Derek Chauvin has ever made any racist comments or actions in his 18-year tenure with the Minneapolis police department, but the entire dust-up over the killing has been shouted as a racial matter, simply because of ONE known fact: Chauvin is white and Floyd was black. THAT’S IT! The entire national outrage is predicated on one thing that has, so far, no evidence whatever in fact.

“CAC? Customer acquisition cost?”
The only thing I could find on that was Common Access Card.

One side wants to talk, the other is now telling the world shut up and listen to us. The civil rights movement was more than 50 ears ago now. Are whites only discriminating towards the blacks who ancestors were slaves? If you look at statistics, foreign born blacks do as well as any other immigration class in the US, So is it systemic racism? It sure is an easy to scapegoat racism for not succeeding. How do you explain Dr. Ben Carson, who was raised by a single mom in the projects, was on the path of joining gangs and living the layabout lifestyle? He changed his path and behavior after a fatal knife fight.
I think the other hinderence in the discussion is the black community’s reluctance to talk about blacks killing blacks, a statistic supported by the FBI. https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018/topic-pages/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-6.xls
Obana is wise to not wander into this discussion as he had 8 YEARS to fix the problem and didn’t.

Don’t worry about it. Most of the people who make comments like CertainSB, don’t make any logical or factual sense anyway. All their opinions are based on feelings and emotion which seldom come into contact with truth.
June 10th, 2020
white people don’t have a problem talking about racism, other races have a problem thinking that because we’re talking about racism that we’re automatically racist.
June 10th, 2020
Don’t care if you’re another colour, just damm glad I’m not… It’s ok to be white, like you even had a choice in the matter… So why suffer any guilt over it, I don’t… Hate everyone equally, that way at least you’re being honest…

I understand why so many of you are scared of a title like this, I’m white and I used to be scared too. I learned when I was a young child that things are less scary with exposure. Instead of arguing from ignorance about the BAD BAD BOOK how about you just read it? You can still hate it after if you want but who knows, maybe you’ll learn something on the way.
June 11th, 2020
this is a really good book, if you check it out for yourself, you’ll probably like it.
June 11th, 2020
Why does all this controversy over the book make me want to listen to it even more?!
June 11th, 2020
Imagine a book is written about how white people can get so defensive over racism….. and white people get so defensive over racism when they see the book cover and they don’t grasp the irony.
June 11th, 2020
Thank you for sharing and proving said fragility in the comment section.

I think the problem is deeper than fragility, although it may present as fragility. As someone who spent many, many years as an addict, even in the womb, I can see what many others can’t see. To my experienced eye, what I see is textbook addict behavior when I look at today’s racists in the U.S. The reason white people don’t want to talk about racism is because they don’t want to admit they have a problem. It’s not hyperbole. White people don’t want to give up their racist ways because they are addicted to racism. It contains fear and relief and release, escape from reality, denial and is a self soothing mechanism of the most depraved variety.. They get high off of it. Dopamine and serotonin hits every time they reinforce or practice their racism. Look at how much they hide it and lie about it. Then, when they are found out, they get very defensive about it. they have special or even secret racist friends. Many even claim racism doesn’t exist so they don’t have to face their addiction. The racist cops are even worse. Apparently being a racist and sharing racist sentiments turns into a virtual speedball when it’s combined with violence and repression of others. Especially if the others are weakened by age or illness. Killing a black person must be the ultimate rush for them. I watch the police rioting and bashing in skulls, even though they know they are being filmed, and I can’t help but wonder how many of the men have raging erections while they perform their violent acts. Racism is a sickness. Racism is a drug, just like heroin. Look how far the cops are willing to go to protect their racist institutions. The supplier of their drug of choice. They are willing to kill for it.
The racist politicians will let the country fall to fascism and ruin as long as they don’t have to treat people of other classes and races with equality.
Black lives do matter, no matter how much you deny it.
So many racists claim to be followers of Christ. He is portrayed as a white man in many bibles and story books. How many blazingly white, blonde haired people do you think there were in the Middle East 2000 years ago. I can’t help but wonder how many adherents to modern Christianity would still participate if Jesus was portrayed with racial accuracy. Probably not many. Especially if Lucifer was portrayed as white. But, we have to leave Satan out of this. Take a minute to google The Seven Tenets Of The Temple Of Satan and you will see that modern Satanists are far more loving, kind and full of humanity than many modern Christians are. Especially those on the right who are part of the Trump death cult.

Well, let’s talk about it. The founders argued over state rights verses centralized power in the form of a federal government all the way back at the beginning, without a consensus, because slavery was at stake.
William Wilberforce, a Caucasian and member of British parliament spent his life fighting slavery.
Following on his heels, the bloodiest war in US history began, in which thousands of white men fought and died for the cause of solidifying the US under the banner of liberty for all.
June 11th, 2020
I think my thoughts will prove to offend everyone.
Black Lives Matter is inherently racist, as the name suggests. I spoke with a black pastor and friend of mine who suggested that All Lives Matter undermines their cause.
On the other hand, any Caucasian who doesn’t think natural rights apply to black people just as much as it does for them, should burn their flag and join ANTIFA.
June 11th, 2020
It’s true that racism is everywhere, and among all people, but the idea of singling out a group of people is inherently racist. The only reason why there is a breakdown in the system is because people have forgotten that natural rights should apply to everyone.
Meanwhile, there is a similarity between Floyd and Flynn, both are victims of a system who has forgotten such social charters as the Magna Carta, which remind public servants that they are NOT above the law and that civilians have rights, as laid out in the US Bill of Rights.

What is really fascinating is that some have commented claiming that other’s comments prove white fragility. This implies that no matter how brain-dead an idea may be, you only prove that its true when you try to blow away the stench of idiocy that permeates it.
Do you all know an accurate synonym phrase for “woke”? Here’s a few: “Intellectually comatose” or “asleep” or “decerebrate” (look that last one up, woke generation, if you know how to use a dictionary, that is).
June 18th, 2020
From the start this the Floyd/Clauvin issue was police brutality. How did it become a racist issue? Just two or three years ago a black Minneapolis policeman, Mohamed Noors, murdered ,Ms. Justine Ruszczyk, a white woman, who called in a public disturbance report. Anyone riot? No!.
Just last year a black man threw a 4 year old white boy off the 4th floor balcony at the Mall of America which is located in Minneapolis. Strange, no riots then either. Maybe it black racism that needs to be addressed, along with police use of excessive force.

Here are some excerpts from a review of this deranged book by a woman who suffered severe abuse by a sociopathic, sex trafficking mother and recognized the same deranged tactics of guilt and shame in the arguments made by DeAngelo. The whole notion of white fragility is based on a logical fallacy called a kafkatrap: a sophistical rhetorical device in which any denial by the accused serves as evidence of guilt. Basically, the fact that you deny that you are a witch is evidence that you are a witch. In this woman’s experience this type of twisted argument was employed by her narcissistic mother to demonstrate that she was a whore.
“White Fragility - what’s wrong with the premise?
It follows the same premise that narcissists use to get a victim to prove their own false guilt from within. The reason that narcissistic abuse is so damaging is because it causes the victim to damn one’s self, no matter their intrinsically known innocence. It manipulates the victim into assassinating their own character and identity, in spite of ironclad internal knowledge of innocence and a preponderance of outward evidence to the contrary.
No amount of external evidence to the contrary is enough to alleviate the constant pressure to internalize the guilt, once a narcissist has their diabolical claws in your mind.
Requests to discuss allegations with a narcissist are met with a slow clever smile spreading across their face, and regulated breathing, as they respond, “The fact that you even want to discuss this, merely proves your guilt.”
DiAngelo argues that white people are inescapably racist, writing, “All white people are invested in and collude with racism,” and that “The white collective fundamentally hates blackness for what it reminds us of: that we are capable and guilty of perpetrating immeasurable harm and that our gains come through the subjugation of others.”
Back to how narcissists operate. How does it benefit the abuser to put the victim’s head in a “guilty of the unprovable” vise? It gives them godlike power over the other person. If you can convince an individual of the unmitigated hopelessness of themselves, you can lead them to assassinate their own identity, all the while believing that they deserve to do so.
The concept of identity assassination that is preached in White Fragility circles does not move the cause of justice forward. You cannot heal injustice by gaslighting everyone of a certain skin color. You cannot heal a lack of POC empowerment by excoriating the power of the individual to stand for or against racism on an individual basis, and to externally do everything within their power to fight injustice in their circles of influence and at the voting booth.
By accruing mass guilt to all white persons, you are removing their agency. Without agency, we cannot affect change.
Agency: to have agency over something means that one has the ability or authority to achieve control.
Furthermore, moral agency is an individual’s ability to make moral judgments based on some notion of right and wrong and to be held accountable for these actions. A moral agent is “a being who is capable of acting with reference to right and wrong.”
The premise of White Fragility, that that we are all born bad and our racism is inescapable, removes agency, moral or otherwise. In removing agency, author Di’Angelo has also removed accountability. Logically speaking, we cannot possibly be accountable for something over which we have no agency of change.
White people publicly accused of racism risk social ostracization and professional ruin. The idea that some white people may be defensive when accused of racism is not surprising. But though SOME white people may exhibit a degree of what DiAngelo calls fragility, her grandiose theory as applied to all or even most white people has two fatal flaws.
There is no way to prove or disprove one’s internal world. Narcs, too, love to deal in the realm of unprovable stuff, because evidence is too, well, inconvenient, for the desired power dynamic.
The legitimacy of a theory is in whether it is unfalsifiable or not.
DiAngelo’s theory of White Fragility is unfalsifiable. It is impossible for someone to prove that they are not fragile, just as it was impossible for me to prove that I was not a whore.
More insidiously, just like my mom, DiAngelo frames her theory of white fragility such that any denial of her theory is interpreted as proof of its validity.
For example, DiAngelo writes that:
“The mere suggestion that being white has meaning often triggers a range of defensive responses. These include emotions such as anger, fear, guilt, and behaviors such as argumentation, silence, and withdrawal from the stress-inducing situation. These responses work to reinstate white equilibrium as they repel the challenge, return our racial comfort, and maintain our dominance within the racial hierarchy. I conceptualize this process as white fragility. Though white fragility is triggered by discomfort and anxiety, it is born of superiority and entitlement.”
DiAngelo leaves white readers with only two options. Either acknowledge your fragility, which proves DiAngelo’s theory, or deny your fragility, which according to DiAngelo, also proves her theory.
White people read the book because they care about fighting racism and being allies to people of color. They are ready to listen and are unabashedly looking for answers to difficult issues. What they are met with instead are Kafkatraps and logical fallacies in a ruse to convince ALL white people that they are racist and fragile.
So, what’s the answer?
I am listening. I care. However, I am unable to follow the siren song of a woman who would use the same manipulation tactics as my psychopathic mother with which to present “the answer”.
I will continue to believe in the power of individual agency to create a better future. Where there are causes that have a scientifically proven track record of increasing the agency and self-empowerment of POC, I will continue to support them.
I will not ascribe to anything that starts with the word, WHITE, which by definition is a bassackwards white-centric notion that decreases POC agency and a continued dependency on WHITE anything.
I will continue to use my finely-honed skills at noticing logical fallacies and kafkatraps. I will continue to stand against all manipulation.”

pkane, long, but well put.
In short, the title “White Fragility” establishes the entire book as virtually nothing but an ad hominem attack, fortified by a Winnie-the-Pooh level of logical discourse.

Dumbest book ever

thank you to the uploader for a great job!
lol wow the knee jerk comments above.
the author takes great pains to explain that racism isn’t a binary, good bad, thing or that you need to wallow in guilt and shame. what is known as the White race has dominated throughout the world and with that has established a generalised control that has only benefited white ppl/countries (namely UK & America but not isolated to just them). these controls do keep minorities down and while there are exceptions, even now, those odds are low and generally only at the good graces of White individuals or they were undeniably useful or there was just no other way to keep them down. the book also acknowledges ableist, sexist and classist behaviour from the same dominant race which can compound the issue. the book even explains how affirmative action actually works and not what is popularly believed it is about.
generally, minorities have had to dance around the sensitivities of White ppl (as evidenced above) in order to survive or even get the hope of advancing their lives in any way possible.
we inherited this deeply flawed system that we maintain and/or are deliberately ignorant of the detrimental effects to minorities that result from it. it is not the responsibility of minorities to make us feel better about this issue. white ppl created it, inherited it, perpetuate it and ignore it therefore we are the ones who need to listen and make the change.

We have got to the point that this is basically considered a racist statement. “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
It just makes me really sad.

This entire concocted concept is the same as any fundamentalist religion: if you don’t confess your sin, then it’s because you’re a sinner. It was conjured up by a mentally ill woman who is supremely racist in order to trick people into her mega-dollars DEI enterprise. Her original paper is laughably poorly written; to call it academic fraud would be insulting to fraudsters. If you’re taken in by this trash, you’re really revealing more about yourself than you are about society. The 5-star ratings therefore are confessions where people tell you how terrible they really are.

What a stupid book. Niggies account for 13% of the population yet commit 55% of all murders and 70% of all felonies yet we’re supposed to believe they’re the victims of “the system.” What a scam. The rest of us are the victims of niggies.

At the end of the day, the book is based off the Author’s point of view or professional opinion. The irony comes when your comments actually validates the book. If you find that you have to write a whole page, post links, and use racial slurs on your disagreement of the book, shows you should probably read it.. Dumb*****
