in the early 1990s, I was a HUGE Mary Higgins Clark addict. Then, one day, the old woman who ran the library found out I was reading the books and got really indignant with me, saying boys can’t read her books. We didn’t have “woke” back then, but I lived in a small town in Pennsylvania and it was 99.9 percent White middle class Christians, so that’s what I was dealing with.
Things aren’t perfect in 2026, but they’re better than that.
Thanks for sharing. I miss those old cassettes sometimes. Even if it was a struggle to keep myself in AA batteries.
