At the intersection of hunting and conservation, a man shares his personal journey from staunch anti-hunter to compassionate, ethical hunter, weaving together a larger history of humans, animals, the environment, and our food systems.
Picture a hunter. Who comes to mind? Millionaire playboys or big truck owning folks? Maybe so, but there’s more to it. Because if you love nature, value sustainability, abhor the pollution and inhumanity of factory farms, you could be a hunter in the making. And if you’ve never even considered hunting, The Shotgun Conservationist reveals all the reasons you should. Brant MacDuff makes us rethink who hunts and why. Growing up an animal lover with no hunting background, MacDuff himself would seem an unlikely advocate. Yet a lifelong love of the outdoors and a restless curiosity compelled him to investigate a simple is hunting conservation? So convinced, he consistently holds a hunting license in multiple states and gives lectures on the positive impact hunting has on conservation efforts nationwide and around the world.
MacDuff tells the story of how he became a hunter and the colorful characters, big personalities, and firsthand research that helped change his mind. His journey led to a deeper understanding of how hunting protects public lands, supports sustainable ecosystems, encourages biodiversity, and can help bridge social and political divides. Along the way, he introduces us to a new generation of hunters, different from timeworn stereotypes and preconceptions. And who better than MacDuff? A trans man living in Brooklyn, he defies expectations of who hunts and invites people of all backgrounds into the field.
Whether or not you decide to take up hunting, The Shotgun Conservationist provides a new perspective and appreciation for those who do.

Love the bullet as it kisses your spinal cord. Love the dog as it rips your throat out as you make your last sound. Love the boot as it kicks your teeth in, out of an attempt to concuss you as a “mercy”. Love the man as he skins your hide. Love the wall as you’re mounted on it by the steady hands of a trained killer with the compassion of a mollusk and the ethics of a syphilis ridden Calvinist.Love the lies you hear from your perch, of “harm reduction” used in sentences describing variations in calibers, while you’re body is devoured by self satisfied dilettantes who think they gone done good.

@toadmanga, a well placed bullet is far more ethical than any fate an animal can have in a slaughterhouse. The trouble with you vegans is you dont look at the important nutritional and cultural reasons for hunting and eating meat, and more often than not you turn people away from your message. There is a place for ethics with animals absolutely, but im not sure if its in being vegan, which can be hard for many to pull off

Abhorring the killing of animals to eat their meat is a direct attack on God, who told us to do so after the worldwide flood, which probably changed the environment so much that we couldn’t survive on plants alone anymore.

Privateero. There are no ethical bullets.
There is no killing “without harm”. State the ethical framework you’re using if you’d like to make a point. I understand and am aware of the cultural reasons for hunting and I just don’t care. Unless it’s a literal environmental necessity for you to hunt other creatures for substistence then it is not necessary, and somehow I don’t read you as a Kalahari bushman or a resident of the amazon basement hey. Culture isn’t sacred. And nutritionally complete diets do not require meat, update yourself on the info please for your own benefit. If I turn people away from “my message” by telling it straight then that’s not my problem. There’s this idea that I should compromise and make myself palatable to people who would directly oppose my project. No thanks. If you reject it out of hand it doesn’t have to be anything more complex than the sulky reaction of a child explaining that. People eat meat for pleasure in the developed world and that’s both false consciousness and demonstrably not the only option.
GiLGiJ I don’t believe in God so I don’t care. Boo hoo. There was no worldwide flood and the bible is a worse guide to history than Herodotus at his most slap dash. Just because you believe something does not make it true, nor make everyone else responsible for the upkeep of your misplaced belief. You have to argue for the validity of it. Which you haven’t done.

USing cannibalism in the future as an ad hoc justification for carnism now is a bit of a weird move on you your part but also just kind of not the win you think it is. Feel free to take another stab at it though.
